I would max it out with RAM and try OpenSolaris inside a VirtualBox.

Googling for "opensolaris macbook" returns some results... Does your
late 2006 model support 64-bits?

Unfortunately vbox on the Mac still doesn't support 64-bit guest OSes
(AFAIK) so that's not an option. Although I could use the 32-bit
version that way.

The late 2006 model MacBook has a 2Ghz Merom (Core 2) CPU, so it will
run the 64-bit OS. I'm just concerned as to what the driver support is
like.

I guess the only way to find out is to try it.

Did you try the Sun Device Detection Tool?

http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.jsp

It runs under OSX too.

I wasn't aware of it. Thanks. I'll give it a go.

Finally got around to trying the compatibility tester on Snow Leopard
and it didn't run. I'll try firing up Windows on the machine and try
running it on that one of these days.

The default Java in Snow Leopard runs in 64-bit mode, and the
compatability tester requires a 32-bit Java.

Use /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences to (temporarily?) change
the default Java used by applications to 32-bits. Then the compat
tester will run.

Thanks. All good except for one unknown Intel device, which probably
doesn't matter, and no guarantee of support for the Intel 82801G (ICH7
Family) High Def Audio Controller. Doesn't seem to matter if I go for
Solaris 10 or OpenSolaris, but I think I'll take the latter, for Time
Slider if nothing else.

For now I have OpenSolaris 64 up and running under vbox. I've decided
against mucking about with the internal drive and I'm going to see if
I can set up an external drive using boot camp.
