Dear all,
What is the best(detectable, easy to use) external DVD-writer to carry
on a backup for data on many Solaris 10 stations?
Please provide me with a model and a vendor ?
Thanks in advance

I'm not aware of any, but a DVD writer is not going to be a lot of
help on a modern machine for backup purposes. A tape drive or external
hard drive is probably more appropriate.

Agreed.

Depending on the OP's data size, a Western Digital Passport
might be sufficient.

However, if I needed an optical media writer for some other purpose,
I would look very closely at Plextor. Their CD and DVD burners
have been rock solid for me with cdrecord.

I've used Joerg Schilling's pxupdate to upgrade the firmware on
Plextor SCSI and ATA drives under Solaris.

Is that USB external DVD supported with Solaris 10 and usable to burn
DVD ?

I see a few USB Plextor burners on the Solaris 10 HCL:

My guess is that Plextor's current burners will also work under
Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris.

Plextor, but most vendors should work fine today!

I had a Sony DVD writer (USB and Firewire) work right out of the box in
late 2005 (S10U1).

Today, it does no longer makes sense to recommend Plextor as Plextor turned
into a reseller 4 years ago. The developers have been fired and Shinano Kenshi
only makes motors.......

Thank you for the update.

Care to tell us which vendors have recently been helpful with cdrecord
development?

Well, a lot did change and it seems that NEC/Sony Optiarc did shrink and
Sony is now the ony owner. As a result, I lost my last contact to the
manufacturing companies about a year ago.....

I have an LG USB DVD writer that seems to work ok for me on my
Sun Blade 2000. Your results may vary...

There's a place in the San Diego area that's made very reliable
enclosures and has very good support.
You might recognize the SurfSTOR name. The company is partners data
systems, inc.
I was on their website today and notice they make an external DVD
drive.
