Do you have the Bitstream Vera fonts installed? If so is the location
listed in xorg.conf (if using that file)?
Also check with fontconfig (or its files).
Go into /etc/fonts/conf.avail/ and do a "fgrep Bitstream *" and see if
anything shows up.

Did you ever get that fixed?
In /etc/fonts I also have conf.avail and conf.d directories.
I have the Bitstream Vera fonts installed in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/vera

Anyhind, I thought by default gedit uses a fixed width system font
(Monospace?).
