Network Connection

Solaris 11.1, 64-bit.

I have multiple OSs installed (WinXP, LMDE, Mint 15 and SuperX) but
installing Solaris got me beat. The installation process won't complete
because of no Internet connection.
The Network icon located in the panel indicates:
Location: NoNet
Network Profile: Automatic (Reactive)
Network Modifiers: Non Active

Also, the Device Driver Utility indicates an issue with L2 Fast Ethernet
and require Internet connection to download driver.

I am not a geek and require assistance to activate/enable network
connection on the live CD.
TIA.

Try a supported NIC:

Well, since the support for WinXP is going to be discontinued in April
next year I am looking for a solid and stable replacement. Is there a
particular reason why the network is disabled by default on all Live
CD's of Solaris or is it just a "bad" download?
Frankly, I didn't think that the Solaris installation would be much
different to Linux and/or Windows. Though I expected 'challenges' but
the unusable network issue took me by surprise. The voluminousness of
installation instruction is remarkable as well.
Thanks for responding.

Exactly the same problem!
"No network interfaces detected".
According to: "About the Network Status Notification Icon"...
The icon indicates 'Partially online (Wired)'.
But it is not connected at all! Very strange.
It looks like I have to make my hands dirty and have to do some more
digging as to why there isn't an Internet connection available on those
2 particular Operating Systems. I always thought that a LiveCD is meant
to to be functioning in albeit slower and at least connect to the net.
Cheers...

It seems likely that neither Solaris nor Illumos has a driver for your
network device. This is not an uncommon problem for Solaris and Illumos.

If you can post details of the device from the DDU program someone
might know if a third-party driver exists.

If you go here <http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/> you will
find a driver for some Atheros (note spelling!) ethernet controllers.

Obviously you won't be able to get the driver from the machine while
you are using the live CD (no network driver...) so you'll need to
transfer it on via a USB stick or something.

There are some instructions in the README file but at a glance it looks
like you can basically just run adddrv.sh as the tarball contains the
pre-built driver.

The Realtek (8168) NIC embedded in my laptop goes deaf after
dual booting from Windows to Solaris 11.1 because the
Solaris driver doesn't support the device's power management.

Eureka! Success at last! The cold-boot trick reinstated my network
connection, though I had to do this several times. But persistence paid
off eventually. Many thanks!
Now back to my original challenge - should I continue or just give it
away. Or should I try to download and install another network driver?

No thanks, I am done with testing. I am not a geek which I had mentioned
in my original post.
The OpenIndiana LiveCD coupled with the attempt updating the driver is
still playing havoc on my computer. Whenever I reboot from LMDE 201303
(Cinnamon Edition) to WinXP the network icon indicates that the network
connection is unplugged. Each time I wish to access WinXP I actually
have to perform a 'cold-boot'. The CPU on both OSs is running
erratically very high - doing work with Spreadsheet etc is now very
cumbersome. Each time I do mouse scrolling the CPU spikes up to 100% for
quite some considerable time, entering data is delayed by 3-5 seconds...
no good at all! (I don't mind reinstalling LMDE but WinXP is a pain and
takes forever considering all the service packs and updates...).
I had at one stage 5 OSs/distros installed to my 1tb HDD and never ever
experienced this kind of trouble. All the previous (Linux) LiveCDs
actually worked! And then again, there is alway a first time.
The OpenIndiana LiveCD screwed up my system comprehensively without even
installing this thing to my HDD...
If the authors ever fix the glitches of the LiveCD I'll consider to give
it another go.
Cheers...

Many thanks for kind support!

I shall try downloading the driver to a USB stick and install it by

In the meantime I was able to install OpenIndiana without any problems

dual-system is working satisfactory.
