OpenSolaris 2010.05

I've just finished updating my PC to OpenSolaris 2010.05. It
suddenly announced itself in the 2009.06 Update Manager, the update
ran without a hitch and there's quite a lot of new stuff. All seems to
be working well. Any ideas why Oracle let this update go live now,
after the August announcement it would never be released?

Its a prerequisite for updating to Solaris 11 Express.

You know, it is almost always the case in the real world that something
is "fair" when you like it and "unfair" when you don't.

I don't see the upgrade option. I followed the instructions on the
Oracle Solaris 11 Express page and my connection timed out. Guess I'll
give it another go later. Wonder if anyone will bother creating an ISO
for it.

The upgrade option is documented in chapter 1 of
<http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/821-1479/gklaa?a=view> The pkg(1)
command does have environment variables to handle slow connections -
PKG_TIMEOUT I think, but check the manpage. I don't remember what build
introduced it - which build (ie snv_xxx) are you upgrading from?

Oracle have an ISO (Live CD) for new installs.

Run "pkg image-update" to update b134a and then follow the
release notes to move to Solaris 11 Express.

There's a repository image media for setting up your own offline
Solaris 11 Express repo:

Ah, but I'm not trying to go to Solaris Express, only to OpenSolaris
2010.05. I've seen the Oracle license agreement and personally I'm not
in a position to pay the license fee once my 6-month trial period has
elapsed.

You probably want to migrate to OpenIndiana.ORG.

Thinking about it, but I'm not such an early adopter these days. I've
got a Dell 1750 on OpenSolaris 2009.06 that I would like to upgrade to
2010.05 while I wait and see what happens with the Illumos guys.

I searched the site to find the License Terms, but could not locate them.

OTOH, if you click on the Terms of Use on any Oracle page, you will find
the following paragraph:

2. Use of Software
Your use of Software is subject to all agreements such as a license
agreement or user agreement that accompanies or is included with the
Software, ordering documents, exhibits, and other terms and conditions
that apply ("License Terms"). In the event that Software is provided on or
through the Site and is not licensed for your use through License Terms
specific to the Software, you may use the Software subject to the
following: (a) the Software may be used solely for your personal,
informational, noncommercial purposes; (b) the Software may not be
modified or altered in any way; and (c) the Software may not be
redistributed.

Mind you, if they were to offer a simple RTU Licence for a modest fee, I
would be happy to pay it, but that paragraph would suit my usage perfectly
well.

You're allowed to use Oracle Solaris for 6 months on a trial basis.
After that it's a hefty annual support contract or remove the
software. Oracle doesn't seem interested in supporting enthusiasts or
people that run a single server and don't require a support contract
(hint: there's no money in it).

There's no such thing. You may find some references around because it
was planned at one point, but was never released.

I don't know any Solaris license which has a 6 month trial period.
The OTN licence which is what you might use for development is a
perpetual licence.

Eh? This thread started with a statement that it _had_ been released.

Interesting! That is more or less the Licence that would suit me. But how
do you get to that page atarting from the Oracle Home Page?

And there is a slightly different (more restrictive) version at
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/testcontent/standard-license-088383.html.
The pointer to it at
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/indexes/downloads/index.html seems to
imply you can use if for "self-educational" purposes, but the actual text
does not seem to say that.

And neither of them is as good as the "Terms and Conditions" found at the
bottom of every page, which seems to give Carte Blanch for "Personal" use.
